At one point what is commonly referred to as a wireframe, was called a schematic. A wireframe would map out sections of information and their location on the screen, whereas a schematic would then indicate more detail of the information presented, its location on the screen and callout interactions. Over time these merged and came to be known as just "wireframes". Wireframes can take many forms, and can be iterative in nature, meaning they may start out as simple boxes on a page and end up with much content detail. Typically, detail such as actual text and content detail should be kept to a minimum so as to focus on the main goal of a wireframe...to indicate screen view layout, identify patterns for templates and indicate user interactions with the interface.
