A site map, or application diagram as it is sometimes called, illustrates the basic architecture of the site or application. This diagram is different from a task flow in the sense that the site map does not map a flow for the user but rather indicates taxonomy and hierarchy within the site. This is generally an iterative tool which may change as necessary through the design phase. One step in the Discovery phase could include mapping an existing application in order to gain a better understanding of the content and information presented. The final site map would normally be incorporated in some form in the final documentation, generally dissected to fit on a standard 8 1/2 x 11 page.
